Movie Wisdom – Sam Elliott Edition

19 Jan

Next week, Justified, my favorite television show, begins its final season. It is filled with great actors who portray great characters, but this season adds one of the all-time favorites, Sam Elliott.Elliott

He has been great in Westerns and other movie genres. In honor of his appearance on Justified, here are some words of wisdom that can be found from his movies.

From Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Move in slowly, check out everything.

Don’t ever hit your mother with a shovel.

From The Quick and the Dead

Why is it that the man who begs for mercy never gives it?

It ain’t never too late, unless you’re dead.

From Road House

Nobody ever wins a fight.

From Gettysburg

Follow the cigar smoke, find the fat man there.

From Tombstone

There’s no normal life. It’s just life.

From The Hi-Lo Country

The only time to yell is when you’re with somebody, or when you’re alone.

From Ghost Rider

You can’t live in fear.

Raise no more devils than you can lay down.

If you don’t make a choice, the choice makes you.

Wise words. Here are some more wise words. Watch Justified. It is awesome.

I love his voice. He’s been doing a lot of advertising voice overs lately. It makes me stop and listen to the commercial, which I’m sure is exactly the point of having him do the voice.

If’n I could afford it, I probably woulda bot one of those damn Ram trucks by now.

That would be dedication to the Sam Elliott cause.

His voice is so distinctive and lovely to listen to!

He also brings a certain authority with it.

      • Musings from a Tangled Mind January 19, 2015 at 22:18 #

He certainly does. It has that authoritative “tone.”

    • Rick January 19, 2015 at 14:45 #

      I always know it’s him.

One of the most easily recognized voices on the airwaves. Him, Morgan Freeman, Patrick Steward, Donald Sutherland. Not that Jim Garner is gone. Remember Jimmy Stewart and all those Campbell Soup commercials? Even John Wayne did commercials, though not voice overs. I love the voices.

I didn’t realise that he was in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I just watched that opening sequence to convince myself. It is one of the best parts of the movie “Why don’t you stick around”, “Thanks but we gotta get moving”
I watched a film with him in just last night – “Did you hear about the Morgans?”. Terrible film but he played a good part as usual!

    • Rick January 19, 2015 at 14:47 #

I didn’t realize it until I looked it up. It was one of his first movies.

      • Andrew Petcher January 19, 2015 at 14:50 #

We both had to look it up! I am still not absolutely convinced that it is him (IMDB says so) but it is a brilliant film opener scene!

I’ve loved Justified from season one when they used the word “holler” correctly. LOL The wonderful acting, the characters you get attached to, and the great writing have just kept it going from there for me. I’m sorry to see it go after this season. I’m anxious to see what Sam Elliott’s character will bring to the dynamics of the show….I’m sure it will be something special. He’s amazing in pretty much everything he does.

I like that they get the area right. They have the right accents and pronounce the names of towns correctly. They have the local stuff down pat.

      • Musings from a Tangled Mind January 19, 2015 at 22:20 #

Yes, they do, so that made a difference when I first started watching it. I hate shows that are based on certain areas and then get the names or dialects wrong. It might be a small thing but it annoys me.

I love Justified! Sam Elliot is mean without his mustache!! 🙂 I loved him in the first role I ever saw him in – R.J. Poteet on Centennial.

    • Rick February 16, 2015 at 04:44 #

He’s great in everything. The Sacketts. Tombstone. I just finished reading Centennial, the novel, because I like the miniseries so much.
