My iPod Has Issues – Way Too Much Food

Man, Thanksgiving was rough. Food, food and more food. Sitting around trying to get over all of that, I decided to look into the mind, or stomach, of my iPod to see if it is hungry.

My iPod Has Issues – It Has Been a Busy Day

It has been a busy day. It all started with a Historic Lebanon meeting at 7:30. Then, I went to work and prepared for my 9:30 class. After a quick lunch, it was time for my 12:30 class. At that point, I spent time at the copy machine making tests. That involves pushing more buttons than they push in a NASA control room.

I left campus and went to the bank. There were deposits to make. Then, it was to a meeting about city council issues. When that meeting was over, I drove to a meeting of the James E. Ward Agriculture and Community Center Management Committee. Yep, that is a along name. A lot of government committees have long names.

At that point, I went back to campus to finish making copies of tests. Of course, that involved pushing a bunch of buttons. On a mission to find copy paper, I ran into a couple of the other history professors and talked to them for a bit.

After all of that, I made it home to have a dinner of cold pizza. To wind down, I decided to have a little bourbon and see what is going on inside the mind of my iPod.

Songs of the Week

I was driving down the road when an old song came over my Sirius XM that I have not heard in a while. “Blue Monday” by Fats Domino is one of my favorites. That is probably because my dad is a fan of the piano player, which is a big deal because my dad is not a huge music person.

As the song played, my mind wandered to other songs about Monday. Then, it wandered to songs about other days of the week. Before realizing it, I conceived of a blog post about my favorite song for each day of the week.Week

This is not an original idea, but that keep me from this endeavor.

Sunday – This song came to mind in a nanosecond. “Sunday Morning Coming Down” was written by Kris Kristofferson and best sung by Johnny Cash. When I hear it, I visualize wannabe country music star walking the streets of Nashville.

Monday – Fats Domino’s Monday song inspired this post, but “Stormy Monday Blues” is my favorite song for this day. It has been recorded by a ton of people, but Bobby “Blue” Bland did it best.

Tuesday – “Tuesday’s Gone” is not about the day. It is about a woman being left behind. Lynyrd Skynyrd had more famous tunes, but, for me, this one ranks at the top. It was also on their first album.

Wednesday – Honestly, I cannot remember hearing a song about Wednesday. Upon searching, I found several but did not know any of them. I am not going to force it. I do not have a favorite Wednesday song. If you know of any let me know.

Thursday – Well, this post is falling apart. I cannot think of a Thursday song, either. However, I went searching and found “Thursday” by Jim Croce. Since Jim Croce does not have any bad songs, this one is my new favorite.

Friday – I am going deep for this one. Ward L. Chandler created the theme for Friday Foster, the movie starring Pam Grier. If you have never seen a Pam Grier movie, then I suggest you get on with it. She is awesome.

Saturday – There are a ton of Saturday songs, and I like a bunch of them. However, I am going to take it into the deep tracks with “Saturday Night in Oak Grove, Louisiana” by Tony Joe White. He never duplicated his “Polk Salad Annie” success, but this one is good because it perfectly describes a big night in a small southern town.

There you have it. A week of songs. What would your week look like?

I was listening to one of the stations on Sirius satellite radio and noticed something going on with the songs. They all had green in their title. Eventually, the DJ came on and explained that they were playing songs about colors.Notes

My iPod Has Issues – We Almost Went to New Orleans

This weekend, we were supposed to take a field trip to New Orleans. However, the forecast called for a bunch of rain and the threat of flooding. Being in a city that is below sea level with the potential of flooding did not appeal to any of the teachers. For that reason, the field trip was cancelled.

To make up for that, I decided to check the old iPod for songs connected to the city New Orleans and the state of Louisiana. Hopefully, there are enough to make a good list.New Orleans

My iPod Has Issues – The Eve of Christmas Eve

Christmas is almost upon us. All those hours of decorating, shopping and “ugly sweater” partying comes down to a couple of days.

In our family, Christmas is spread over a couple of days. The afternoon of Christmas Eve is spent at the home of my parents. Christmas Eve night is a bit of a puzzle. Traditionally, my mom’s family and her mom’s family get together at the exact same time in two different counties. For that reason, we compromise and alternate years. This year, we will go to her mom’s place.

Through the years, Christmas Day has been less hectic. We go to my brother’s home for breakfast with his family. For me, that used to be the end of it. We used to celebrate with my dad’s side of the family, but most of them are no longer with us. Since out marriage, we drive a couple of counties away to visit my father-in-law’s relations.

In other words, the next couple of days are going to be crazy. Of course, Christmas is like that for a lot of people. We are lucky that our families do not live half way around the world.

Drive. Eat. Open gifts. Drive. Open gifts. Visit. Eat. That is a ton of activity. Then, it is all over. The decorations come down. The food leftovers are put into Tupperware. Normalcy returns.

In anticipation of the craziness to come, let us explore the craziness of my iPod. Unfortunately, it will not be Christmas themed because there is only one Christmas song on the playlist. However, I will cheat a little and start things off with that solitary Christmas tune.Bing Crosby

My iPod Has Issues – The Griswold’s Go to D.C.

Tomorrow, my wife, my stepdaughter and I are traveling to Washington, D.C. to explore the halls of power and see a lot of cool stuff. We are doing it the old-fashioned way – by driving. Well, that is not as old-fashioned as the way Andrew Jackson went to Washington after his election, but it is old-fashioned in the terms that we are not flying.

I grew up going on road trips across the country. My wife grew up going to one place and hanging out for a while. This trip is a compromise. I get to drive, and she gets to stay in one spot for most of the time. We are also mixing in historic stuff with a foray to a beach after the D.C. adventures are finished.Griswold

Later, we will start packing the vehicle, and my mind will start focusing on getting us from here to there. For the next week, I will check-in and read blogs, but I will not be writing any. Upon our return, I am certain that there will be some good stories to share.

My iPod Has Issues – Duck Dude Edition

There are a myriad of topics I could write about. Christmas is on its way. There’s a big trip in our future. Of course, there’s also the big controversy about the guy who makes duck calls and became a television star. As I tweeted, he has the right to his own opinion, but he doesn’t have the right to his own television show. As American citizens, we have freedom of speech. As employees of private corporations, that freedom has consequences.

I’m Walking to New Orleans

Actually, I’m not, but I like Fats Domino and wanted to quote his song. In reality, I am driving to New Orleans. I, along with several other faculty members, am taking a group of students to the Crescent City to learn fascinating history and immerse ourselves in the culture. This will involve eating great food, listening to great music and, well, doing other things, too.

Due to our travels, I will not be able to enter the Surrounded by Imbeciles world for a few days. Never fear, I will return after the weekend to recount our experiences.
